Installing a Bathroom Suite
When it comes to creating a bathroom suite in your home, it is no small task. It will require plumbing, carpentry, electric and most likely tiling. If you have some experience in these areas, you might consider tackling the job yourself over several weekends. Otherwise, you might consider setting aside a large portion of your budget to have professionals come in a do the work.
What you will need:
- A space located next to a bathroom – like a large closet or even another small bedroom.
- A budget of what you can spend – talk with a real estate agent or other financial consultants in the industry to see what value a bathroom suite is likely to add to your home and use that as a basis for your budget.
- Time to complete the tasks or time to supervise the professionals.
Do It Yourself:
If you are starting from scratch, you will want to clear the space completely. It is then important that you seal the space with moisture barrier board (the bathroom is one of the wettest spaces in your home). Once you have the room sealed up then you are ready to begin placement of your fixtures.
Start by measuring the space and marking out anywhere existing pipes might be (for another bathroom or laundry room). If you can place your fixtures in front of or very near existing pluming work then it will help cut back on costs.
Choose your fixtures before you begin running plumbing or wiring. Otherwise you may end up having to buy your fixtures to fit what you run.
Follow the instructions for setting and installing each individual fixture. Sometimes the instructions will come with the fixture. If the instructions are not included then you can find instruction online or check out a do it yourself book from your local library.
